FTP Support - Using Cute FTP to upload and download files from
the WeDoHosting.com Web Servers
Most accounts at WeDoHosting.com have very simple accesses for our clients.
Instructions, including FTP path, username and password were sent to
you at the email address provided when you signed up. If you have forgotten
any of this information, please visit https://secure4.wedohosting.com/customer
for password/instruction retreival.
There are so may different kinds of FTP programs available, that it
would be impossible to write instructions for each one. However, the
2 main ones that we see our hosting clients using are Cute
FTP and WS_FTP.
You can download the free version of WS FTP, and Cute FTP has a free
trial.
Cute FTP:
- Launch application
- In the "File" menu (first one on left top of bar) choose
"Site Manager" by clicking on it.
- With the "Site Manager" window open, choose "New…"
from bottom left of screen.
- A site settings box will appear. The variables that we are going to
enter are on the right hand side.
- Label for Site: Your choice - call it what you will remember
FTP Host address: www.yourdomain.com
FTP Site User Name: the name we sent with the setup instructions
FTP Site Password: Again, sent with original instructions
FTP Site connection Port: Leave at :21
Login Type: Choose Normal
- Then, press connect, and if you are connected to the web, you should
see some "handshaking" going on, then a Welcome screen popup,
then you're in.
- You will see a single folder in there. This is called "htdocs".
You will put all files you want to be accessible from the web in this
folder. Just double click on it, and you're in.
- There will be a default "index.html" in the site already.
This is simply a placeholder and may be deleted.
- Select files from your hard drive on the left screen, and drag into
right screen and you will see them being uploaded.
- When it's all done, you're finished.
Now, there are many points to remember when designing a site:
A: The top page MUST be named index.html or index.htm
(.html comes up first)
B: Servers are case sensitive to file names. If your
code is looking for image.gif, but you have it named IMAGE.GIF, things
will not work out. Make sure all file names are consistent.
C: Canada and the United States use slightly different
spellings on some words.
